What is lime plaster used for?

What is the difference between hydraulic and non-hydraulic lime plaster?

Hydraulic lime plaster sets faster and can suit more demanding or slightly damper conditions, while non-hydraulic lime putty plaster is softer, slower setting and often preferred for delicate conservation work, ceilings and laths.

Why choose lime plaster instead of gypsum plaster?

Lime plaster is more vapour open and generally more accommodating of movement, which makes it better suited to many older buildings and solid walls. Gypsum can still be appropriate in dry modern interiors, so the right choice depends on the building and substrate.

Is lime plaster suitable for listed buildings and solid walls?

In many cases, yes. Lime plaster is widely used in restoration, conservation and solid-wall renovation because it is more compatible with traditional building fabric than dense modern plaster systems.

Factory-made lime plaster products are commonly assessed under BS EN 998-1 for rendering and plastering mortars, while building lime itself falls under BS EN 459-1. Depending on the manufacturer and product route, you may also see CE or UKCA marking, a Declaration of Performance, and sometimes reaction-to-fire declarations such as A1. Always check the individual datasheet for the exact product you are buying.
